a thought on flow and intuition, each object in manipulation is normally labeled as an inanimate object, and to the eyes of the unskilled, that is all it is. a lifeless hunk of plastic or metal attached to the end of a rope. but in the eyes of a flow artist, those toys are the most fully animated objects we possess. not only do we understand the full range of executable motion with an object but for those of us who contact we understand that, that animation, the kinetic motion itself, creates a consistent and patterned path of travel. as this path is more finely understood and acutely trained. the body, the muscles, create memory that is more solid and precise than any amount of theory will allow you to understand. the act of spinning to create and forge that muscle memory with each new technique and transition, compounds and grows exponentially. the simple act of spinning, whether it be for play, drilled practice, or performance serves as the platform for growth and understanding through physical sensational experience. To take this level of understanding and apply it to flow is to understand how a fish swims through water, the mechanical motion of the fish to propel itself is known. the currents and wave forms of the tides creates a infinite range of motion for the fish to move within. the air around you, the life force that you take in with every breath, serves a similar purpose. welcome to the pure universal flow. all encompassing omnipresent and ever flowing. each person and each toy has a different relationship with this flow, and to understand that flow is what, for me changes the flow arts from something playful into something spiritually transgressive.
find your groove, the flow that inspires you. and as soon as you find it dive in head first! from my experience it start with a sensation, feel it, know it, do it again, do until even the slightest sensation reminds you pre-compounded muscles memory. eventually even your hardest tricks will become play as your skill grows.
